Dojo Inherits a Grid
Probably one of the most requested Rich UI components is some sort of tabular data grid system. After the Rich Editor, it’s probably the UI piece that can be the most feature rich, interactive part of a UI. There are grid/table components out there in all sorts of guises.
It’s great to hear that Dojo will be getting a 1st class grid widget for 1.0.
Being a big fan of the Dojo toolkit, it was always a shame that you had to rely on the third part commercial widget from Turbo Ajax to get a good quality, fast and rich table UI.

Now don’t get me wrong the TA Grid widget is good, in fact it’s very good, but it’s also commercial and it’s 3rd party. Which always gave me the impression it wasn’t the easiest thing to use once you wanted to do something different with it. On the various times I looked at extending it or adding functionality, I always found myself wishing it was more like the OOTB Dojo widgets, in it’s structure and extension.
I wonder if this is just an observation of the difference between Open Source code and Commercial code, who knows.
Scott is now a major contributor to the Dojo toolkit, and his direction has lead the way for some of the best parts of the 0.9-1.0 direction, so that’s not a compliant - more an observation.
That said, I’m very excited about it being “brought/gifted/inherited” into the toolkit so it will get disseminated and dijit’ized.
I was also impressed by the list of names associated with the transaction, SitePen, Mozilla, nexaweb, redfin, snaplogic, activegrid (an interesting mixed group of companies).
I’ll be watching (and hopefully contributing - if only opinions) the progress of this as we move towards the winters release of Dojo 1.0.
Congrats to all involved, it looks like it’s a win win for almost everyone concerned.
